Director, Public Affairs, Therapeutic Area Communications, Inflammation

Director, Public Affairs, Therapeutic Area Communications, Inflammation:

Specific Responsibilities:

Reporting to the VP of Public Affairs, Worldwide Therapeutic Area Communications and Asia, this role will lead communications about Gilead’s research and development efforts and future product portfolio in Inflammation. Responsibilities include:

  • Building a therapeutic area narrative for Gilead’s work in Inflammation, with input from a cross-functional team including Government Affairs, Clinical Research, Medical Affairs, Commercial Planning and US Marketing

  • Developing and implementing the product launch communications plan for Filgotinib

  • Identifying/creating targeted thought leadership opportunities for Gilead’s therapeutic area leadership

  • Generating disease area educational content for Gilead’s social media and employee communications platforms, in partnership with the broader Public Affairs team

  • Partnering with the Community Engagement team on stakeholder mapping and outreach

  • Championing alignment on Inflammation communications through collaboration with internal functions

  • Working closely with Public Affairs leads across all geographies to drive alignment and excellence in communications about Inflammation externally and internally

  • Maintaining relationships with key reporters to encourage coverage of /respond to inquiries about Inflammation

  • Leading issues preparedness and issues management efforts

  • Managing PR agency partners

  • Conducting all activities with integrity and in line with Gilead’s code of ethics and business conduct policies

  • Managing budgets to target

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

  • Typically requires a BA degree in communications, liberal arts, business or science-oriented field and 10 years of relevant experience, which includes 8-10 years of healthcare public relations experience

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills

  • A passion for scientific communication and ability to understand complex scientific data

  • Ability to interact with senior management and academic experts appropriately, with confidence and ease

  • Ability to work cross-functionally to drive alignment with business and communications objectives

  • Experience managing multiple projects (timelines, budgets, priorities) simultaneously with a focus on delivering results

  • Demonstrated experience in media relations and issues management

  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulations and principles specific to communications for a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company

  • Must have experience with public relations tactics and resources and the relationship of those tactics to other department roles and functions

  • Ability to deliver formal presentations to external and internal audiences of a variety of sizes

  • Prior communications experience in inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is preferred
