Job Description

Specific Responsibilities:

Gilead seeks a highly motivated and collaborative scientist to support and drive research efforts to discover and develop novel therapies for the treatment of chronic metabolic and fibrotic diseases, including Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD) and related kidney and liver diseases.The successful candidate will support discovery and translational research activities aimed at characterizing novel therapeutic targets and advancing clinical programs. The role is within an established group focused on fibrotic, metabolic and inflammatory diseases and will interface with multidisciplinary project teams. This position provides an exciting opportunity to have high-impact on the growth of new therapeutic areas within an established research group focused on developing drugs for diseases with serious, unmet medical needs.

The successful candidate will work in a project team-based research structure to lead or support biological investigations of new and established projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Independently design, perform and manage experiments on cell lines including primary rodent and human cell cultures to support validation of novel therapeutics.

  • Assess therapeutic potential and mechanism of action of new drugs by analysis of tissues and plasma from pre-clinical rodent models.

  • Work with CROs and academic collaborators to design/coordinate pre-clinical studies and sample analysis.

  • Presents results of work, interprets data, draws conclusions, and makes recommendations regarding presented material and nature of work.

  • Proactively troubleshoot technical issues and recommend potential corrective actions based on personal observations and literature searches.

  • Maintains familiarity with scientific literature and applies knowledge to research projects.

  • Demonstrates strong communication skills (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to communicate ideas, objectives and results.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

  • The candidate must have experience in using and understanding modern molecular biology and biochemical techniques including methods to evaluate cell signaling (western blot, immunoprecipitation, seahorse), immunoassays (i.e. ELISA), gene expression analysis (i.e. RT-PCR, Nanostring, RNAseq), tissue analysis (homogenization, cell isolation).

  • Extensive in vivo cell biology experience including manual isolation and culturing of primary cells from animal models (e.g. podocytes, tubule epithelial cells, fibroblasts) and development of novel cell-based assays is required.

  • Prior experience working with different types of primary human cells is a plus. Knowledge of mitochondria function and cellular energetics is a plus.

  • Prior knowledge and research experience in fibrotic diseases, metabolic disorders and Diabetic Kidney Disease is preferred.

  • Strong analytical and computer skills are required, including proficiency with basic data analysis programs (Excel, GraphPad Prism) and application of statistics is preferred.

  • Applicants must have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), and strong organizational and planning skills.

  • The successful candidate must be able to manage multiple projects at any given time, and work in a fast-paced, cross-functional and highly collaborative team environment.

Required Education and Experience:

  • 14+ years of experience with BS degree in a related scientific discipline.

  • 13+ years of experience with MS degree in a related scientific discipline.
