We have the following exciting opportunity in our Foster City, CA location:

The Associate Manager of Building Automation provides technical leadership and accountability to all aspects of the operations and maintenance that includes all buildings at Gilead's Corporate Headquarters in Foster City, CA. Position reports to the Facility Manager of Controls.


  • With the support of the Controls Manager, own the operations of all the Foster City Building Automation Systems (BAS) that currently include: 4 GMP Insight/Apogee Systems with 4 GMP InfoCenter Systems, 1 Non-GMP Insight/Apogee System, 1 Cypress System, 1 ALC System, 1 Metasys and 4 individual Trane-controlled Systems

  • Oversee two full-time contracted Automation Engineers and all applicable OEM Automation Service Providers

  • Ensure all GMP BMS Standard Operating Procedures, IT-Operating Procedures and Work Instructions are being completed in compliance with GMPs.

  • Champion all power outages, enabling and ensuring recovery to all Foster City BMS Systems and/or devises

  • Support Facility Gilead Project Managers (PMs) with small projects, examples: graphic changes, chamber moves, room balancing, fume hood adjustments and HVAC code changes

  • Perform and/or ensure the following is being executed: system access, periodic reviews, preventive maintenance (servers & front ends), system recovery and proper data storage

  • Provide leadership and/or expertise to the following departments: EH&S, Process Chemistry, Project Management, FPD and Engineering

  • Continuously improve the BAS Operations team by means of amending/creating procedures, tracking system(s) uptime, adding structure to the team and received services

  • Analytically improve the BAS functionality by means of tracking BAS status (alarm points and OPER points), network analysis, PM review with execution of needed improvements and with GMP systems, spearhead Change Management (CM) records

  • Support the Gilead Sustainability Operations team by controlling the BAS to the EnerNOC concept


  • Proven experience of an automation role of a minimum of 10+ years with a bachelor degree

  • 8+ years of relevant experience and a MS degree

  • Must have a high level of Siemens BAS operating and programming abilities (PPCL wiz)

  • Must have a strong understanding of HVAC systems, Chillers and Boilers

  • Must be able to provide results while remaining organized in a large scale operation that includes a very fast moving environment, changing priorities and constant added tasks

  • Automation proficiency of JCI “Metasys”, ALC, Trane and PI Data Historian system is a plus

  • An understanding of GMP, ALCOA, 21 CFR Part 11, EMA Annex 11 and Annex 5 is major plus

  • Proven experience of supervisory or leadership roles of a minimum of 2+ years

  • The ability to independently create, route and close change control, deviations and CAPAs using Track Wise, is a major plus

  • Ability to read and understand P&ID’s, electrical & architectural drawings

  • Knowledge of theory of VFD drives, motor controls, sensors, actuators, heaters, refrigeration, pumps, controllers, 4-20mA and 0-10v signals

  • Effectively communicates with peers and project teams, engineers, project managers, technicians, and subcontractors

  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Visio, MS Project and type more than 20 words per minute
