Occupational Summary

Manages and coordinates activities of personnel engaged in the operation of animal care facilities in the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources.

Work Performed

  1. Supervises the animal care staff.

  2. Plans and schedules work assignments. Ensures that schedules areefficient,assignments are madepromptly, and working time is utilized efficiently.

  3. Assigns duties to employees and monitor quantity and quality of work performed. Communicates assigned duties verbally and in writing.

  4. Monitors work assignments daily, weekly, and in accordance with SOPs.

  5. Establishes performance standards for animal care and facility sanitation according to animal welfare regulations and AAALAC accreditation guidelines.

  6. Makes recommendations to Director, Assistant Director and/or Staff Veterinarian and participates in leadership team meetings.

  7. Monitors repairs,equipment, materials, and supplies needed for facility operations such as cagewash systems, carts, wheel castors, light timers, automatic watering devices and the condition of the physical plant.

  8. Inspects facility daily.

  9. Assists Assistant Director in assigning animal housing space to achieve needs of research projects and the efficient use of facilities and manpower.

  10. Issues appropriate corrective action, including counseling andformal actions when needed, in accordance with Duke University work rules.

  11. Monitors attendance of employees in accordance with appropriate University/departmental policies and procedures.

  12. Conducts interviews and makes hiring recommendations.

  13. Facilitates the movement of animalscoming to the university and the movement of animals withinthe medical center, and other facilities as needed.

  14. Expands technical knowledge base to enhance effectiveness on the job.

  15. Leads staff meetings and attends leadership team meetings.

  16. Serves on various committees/projects as assigned.

  17. Shows initiative by making suggestions that lead to improved work processes.

  18. Identifies opportunities to enhance customer service.

  19. Takes initiative to promote a safe work enviornment. Ensures that employees are following OESO and department safety guidelines.

  20. Demonstrates leadership by helping staff to achieve goals.

  21. Ensures that commitments are met and problems resolved when out of the office.

  22. Consistently fosters respect in the workplace.

  23. Displays excellent communication skills in listening and respondingto others in all situations.

  24. Communicates the need to train and support employees as thedepartment changes.

  25. Treats customers with dignity and respect.

  26. Delegates challenging assignments to employees to support development.

  27. Balances quality and cost effectiveness in making decisions.

  28. Participates in AALAS Certification Registry and maintain “Registered” status at Laboratory Animal Technologist, and CMAR Levels.

  29. Reports to the Assistant Director, Head of Facility operations.

Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Animal Husbandry, Biology, AnimalScience or related field.LATG certification required; CM certification preferred.


Work requires seven years of experience in laboratory animal resources,to include four years in managerial experienceOR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
