Henry Ford Health System Research Abstract Analyst II / Fulltime / Days - Detroit in Detroit, Michigan

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Reviews, interprets and collects clinical data from the medical record for local, national and international research studies. Abstracts clinical data to satisfy numerous HFHS/HAP quality initiatives: COE’s, P4P, Utilization Review, System Registries, HEDIS, Risk Adjustment, NHSN Infection control, Hospital Acquired Conditions, CMS Core Measures, CMS HCC and Coding validation. Please note dollars at risk to HFHS/HAP exceeds thirty million dollars.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identifies, collects and interprets pertinent clinical data from documents in the medical record (paper and electronic) including physician notes, health histories, operative reports, pathology reports, lab reports, radiology reports, pharmacology, discharge summaries, consults and inpatient stays.

  • Responsible for protecting and maintaining the confidentiality of patient information and ensuring the integrity of the medical record. May include ongoing extensive review of patient's clinical course throughout project treatment period and collection of survival information until death.

  • Designs, utilizes, monitors and maintains abstracting tools used for the systematic collection of clinical data. May pilot new abstracts and assist in developing abstracting guidelines and definitions.

  • Participates in quality assurance and compliance activities. Plans and coordinates audits with project liaisons. Prepares for and participates in all project site visit and clarifies and resolves any discrepancies or conflicting data as requested.

  • Submits all data, copies of medical records, etc. as required in the timeframe specified. Interprets and verifies patient eligibility to all projects and/or registries based on patient eligibility criteria and pre-study requirements such as appropriate disease staging, tumor measurements, labs, and diagnostic radiological testing.

  • Understands and complies with all applicable institutional and external agency policies and procedures. Understands and abides by all HIPAA standards.

  • Monitors and provides data management support with respect to patient eligibility, protocol compliance, data submission and federal regulatory requirements for multiple site projects.

  • Provide orientation and mentoring to new employees or other staff.

  • Participates in continuing education activities to improve knowledge of job performance or to maintain credentialing.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Associate degree in Health Information Management, plus one of the following credentials: RHIT, RHIA, CTR, CCRP. Bachelor's degree preferred.

  • Two (2) years of experience as Research Abstract Analyst I.

  • Must have a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, disease processes, medical terminology, pharmacology, and coding systems.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products – Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access.

  • Experienced in accessing web-based programs, for example email, internet, vendor-based software as Midas, Quantros, etc.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • One of the following credentials: RHIT, RHIA, CTR, CCRP.
