Process Development Scientist/Engineer: Separation Science- Decatur, IL
This is an exempt level position.
The Process Development Scientist/Engineer will be responsible for leading the discovery and development of various downstream separation processes from bench to pilot demonstration and potentially to commercial scale production. In addition, the Process Development Scientist/Engineer will support both plant troubleshooting and continuous improvement efforts. The Process Development Scientist will be expected to work across various groups including operations, business development and R&D and may be expected to lead projects and direct reports. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2+ years of experience (5+ preferred) with separations process development including the design, setup, and optimization of simulated moving bed chromatography, membrane filtration, crystallizations, ion exchange, and/or liquid/solids separations. A Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (chemistry or chemical engineering preferred) and 2+ years of relevant experience is required.
Development and transfer of robust separation processes including simulated moving bed chromatography, membrane filtration, crystallizations, ion exchange, and/or liquid/solids separations.
Work with plant operations on both troubleshooting and continuous improvement efforts.
Design and run experiments including the selection of sampling procedures, analytical methods and some routine analytical analysis.
Identify and evaluate new technologies for separations.
Design, set up, operate and maintain lab and pilot separations equipment.
Maintain housekeeping and observe safety standards in lab and pilot plant.
Consolidate, interpret and present data/conclusions/recommendations in both written and oral formats.
Work within a diverse team to evaluate, develop and transfer processes to production.
Direct and train technicians.

A Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (chemistry or chemical engineering preferred).
2+ years of relevant experience (5+ preferred).
Strong technical background with various lab equipment and instrumentation.
Familiarity with standard downstream unit operations, e.g. crystallization, filtration, distillation, etc.
Proficiency with various analytical tools, e.g. NMR, GC, HPLC, IR, UV, RI, etc.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Understanding of chemistry, math, physics, biology, materials, and design principles.
Skilled with basic piping and mechanical procedures and knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment.
Ability to handle moderately heavy tools and materials, e.g. pipe wrenches, five gallon buckets, and hand-carting 55 gallon drums.
