Surgical Technologist Req #: 30108881 Category: Technologists Technicians Facility: Beaumont Hospital Dearborn Department: Nursing Obstetrics Delivery Schedule: Casual/Contingent Shift: MidnightsHours: 1800-0630 Job Details:GENERAL SUMMARY:Under the general direction of a Registered Nurse, performs a variety of duties in the Operating Room area to assist the surgical team, including scrubbing, preparation and care of instruments, clean up of linen/equipment and instruments, assembling laser, drills, video equipment and the like, processing surgical instruments, emptying linen and waste bins, and transporting patients and equipment.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:1. Scrubs as a member of the surgical team.2. Prepares surgical suite with necessary instruments and supplies; arranges instruments, and assists surgeon by passing instruments and supplies during the operation.3. Assists in positioning patients on operating table; drapes patient; adjusts table as needed or according to physician's request.4. Observes surgical procedures and notifies appropriate person of hazards, break in sterile technique and/or emergency situation. Complies with all safety protocols and department policies.5. Acts as a second assist during the operative procedure by carrying out technical tasks other than cutting, clamping and suturing of tissue.6. Cleans and maintains surgical equipment in the Operating Room; maintains supplies. Performs necessary clean up of linen, equipment and instruments prior to return to C.S.P.7. Applies wound dressing or casting materials as directed. Assembles drills, laser equipment, video equipment, microscopes, etc.8. Assists with transport of patients to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit; transports items to Pharmacy, Radiology and Laboratory; empties linen and garbage bins.9. Responsible for processing surgical instruments, rotates sterile supplies, collects identified supplies for reprocessing.10. Stocks Operating room with required equipment and supplies, maintains related records and files.BASIC QUALIFICATIONSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education / Training: Requires level of knowledge normally acquired through completion of a program in Surgical Technology from an accredited school. May accept military training with related surgical scrub experience in lieu of the surgical technology program.B. Work Experience: Requires a minimum of successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program with positive references from instructors if a new graduate. Military training with surgical scrub experience may be accepted.A minimum of six months to one-year surgical tech experience is preferred.C. Contacts and Communications: Requires highly effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact daily with patients, licensed and unlicensed staff, physicians and other members of the Patient Care staff in often high-stress situations.D. Analytical Demands: Requires the ability to follow established procedures and instructions; apply knowledge of normal case procedures, equipment and routines. Ability to recognize and effectively communicate hazards, break in sterile technique and/or emergency situations.E. Computer Skills: Requires basic keyboarding skills, ability to learn and apply specific entry processes in the hospital electronic medical record system.F. Certification, Licensure, Registration: CPR certification is required within six mon
