AECOM is currently seeking a Public Health Engineer at either the Senior or Principal level to be based in St Albans or Wimbledon. Your role will involve ensuring the completion of projects by actively driving design initiatives, acting as a key point of contact and information, developing designs and working through calculations.
You will be involved all aspects of design consultancy for public health and fire protection engineering including sketches, design, specifications and drawing production across all our project sectors. In addition to the above you will also be responsible for improving our quality control and standards, working within a team and by helping our business develop though exceptional delivery and a positive approach to client liaison.

Our Building & Places division provides a multidisciplinary offering consisting of a variety of consultancy services ranging from Civil, Structural, MEP and Environmental Engineering, Cost & project Management and Quantity Surveying.

The mechanical and electrical engineers work on projects within residential, commercial, aviation, defence, healthcare, education, pharmaceutical, sports, and leisure. You will be joining a long established team of 26 Public Health (PH) engineers within AECOM UK who have a wealth of experience across numerous projects and sectors including residential, commercial, education and healthcare as well as overseas projects in the UAE and Far East. With a well balanced team structure (ranging from trainee to director level) there will be the opportunity to mentor junior engineers and progress your career as a team leader/subject expect.
We have a structured training programme for Public Health engineers which you can benefit from and add to as we continue to develop and upskill all our engineers, for example in Revit and fire protection engineering.
You will help AECOM’s Building & places discipline by supporting multiple projects and teams with direct design and delivery activities. You will be experienced in the delivery of all phases of a project from inception to completion, but specifically design focused in similar types of Projects.
You will do this by using your experience of seeing conceptual designs through to completion and dealing directly with clients. Your duties will be split between technical outputs, co-ordinating and quality control as outlined below.
Drafting, modelling & reporting:
Provide support at all stages of the design process on related projects – In particular bring specialist insight into the concept design stage to ensure the subsequent design stages are developed with a winning strategy and appropriate level of innovation.
Be conversant with Revit/ 3D drawing production and be able to interrogate a model and help resolve coordination issues.
Maintain, enhance and apply both design and technical knowledge ensuring production of high-quality drawings for review by Senior team members.
Public Health design of domestic hot & cold water services and above-ground & below ground drainage, Rainwater, Fire Protection systems, automatic controls and related Public Health utility systems as assigned.
Be a champion for sustainable solutions and help the design team realise these systems such as Rainwater/ Grey Water Harvesting, Blue roofs and other attenuation systems.
Experience in the following would be an advantage: Specialist (laboratory) drainage systems, Fuel gas systems, Medical gases systems, Medical vacuum systems, Solar thermal hot water systems, Borehole water systems, Water and oil leak detection systems, Water usage audits, Specification and management of drainage surveys, Asset condition inspections and reports
A good understanding of BREEAM, LEED and Ska Rating design integration
Preparation of public health design calculations, drawings, specifications, and tender documents.
Participate in the design progress and coordination meetings.
Prepare outline scheme report / technical content of the design information.
Prepare specifications, schedules, drawings and any other contract documents developed through the RIBA work stages.
Coordinate and communicate:
Coordination with other discipline engineers as applicable for the continuity of the design process
Attend progress, design team and coordination meetings where required.
Input to pre-qualification and selection of contractors, respond to tender queries, comment and review tender returns.
Attend tender / client interviews. Attend site inspection meetings.
Obtain the necessary information both internally and externally from Architects, Quantity Surveyors and Design Consultants for the design to proceed.
Liaise with clients, professional organizations, contractors, suppliers, sub-contractors and other design.
Identify and meet effectively the requirements and expectations of clients.
Ensuring adherence to Corporate Standards & that all activities are performed in a safe manner and comply with AECOM’s H&S requirements.
Ensuring the relevant QA procedures are followed.
Maintain, develop and retain the highest appropriate standard of technical skill.
Ensure the project work complies with the Project Management Plan and Program.
Experience of seeing conceptual designs through to completion and dealing directly with clients.
The successful candidate will Chartered or ideally be working towards Chartership though not essential for the right candidate, and have proven design experience, delivering to quality, time and budget. This role will suit someone with a building services degree, who is enthusiastic & self-motivated.
Professional membership (MCIBSE/ SoPHE).
Relevant experience in design and delivery of projects within the consulting industry (preferable).
Ideally you will have a track record in the design of public health systems on a variety of building projects, i.e. retail, mixed-use developments, hospitality, healthcare, offices and industrial etc.
A good understanding and use of public health design software.
Excellent skills in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel & PowerPoint).
A British Passport would be an advantage (but not essential) as we have several projects that require different levels of security clearance.
A Bachelor’s Degree in Building Services Engineering or related subject though candidates with HNC/HND and appropriate experience will also be welcome.
Engineering accreditation (CEng or equivalent) would be advantageous.
