Assists pharmacists in performing a variety of general technical duties related to the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients. These duties require knowledge of and skills in the preparation and distribution of drugs in various dosage forms. Responsible for unique tasks consistent with technician certification status requirement, and also performs specialized technical tasks not performed by other technicians. Supports pharmaceutical care for patients and complies with laws & regulations of appropriate state and federal agencies and guidelines of JCAHO.

Exhibits good interpersonal skills in interacting with supervisors, peers, and others outside pharmacy.
Obtains supplies, prepares and labels drug orders under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Calculates and compounds aliquot doses.
Distributes and/or transports medications and carts to appropriate patient care areas in a timely manner and under a pharmacist's supervision.
Monitors inventory levels, stocks shelves, maintains order and cleanliness in assigned areas and maintains all required records.
Receives and/or initiates verbal medication orders and checks another technician's refill of medications and/or repackaging of medications from bulk to unit dose if authorized to do so by his/her supervising pharmacist.
Evaluates activities of the service or operation and recommends improvements. Implements changes when appropriate.
Makes beneficial recommendations for improvements in procedures, guidelines and continuing education training.
Provides training and participates in in servicing departmental employees and students in technical aspects of pharmacy services.
Serves as a good steward of the institutions resources, including time on the job.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Completion of a pharmacy technician training program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)
Experience: 1,000 documented hours work experience as a technician under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist REQUIRED. Total of at least 1 year hospital pharmacy experience in addition to requirement PREFERRED.
Licensure, Registry or Certification Required:
Current registration with SC Board of Pharmacy as a state certified pharmacy technician; (certified technicians will have passed the National Technician Certification Board exam or a SC Board of Pharmacy approved exam AND must maintain current certification status).
Special Training: Must have thorough knowledge of medical and pharmacy terminology; possess good mathematical skills; possess problem-solving abilities; able to work in team situations; able to handle urgent, stressful situations; Corporate and departmental mandatory training required annually; must have thorough knowledge of National, State, and Corporate regulations and standards.
