Cosmic AES is seeking a Firmware Embedded Systems Engineer II to support Department of Defense customers in the development of methods to find, fix, and track adversaries operating advanced satellite-based systems. We use Agile development methods to build unique projects around motivated individuals and their strengths. Each engineer will have the opportunity to incorporate their own skills and ideas into the DNA of the final project, and to grow alongside other RF, signals, space and cyber experts supporting the warfighter.
The primary responsibilities for this project include designing, developing, maintaining, and testing code using prototype systems. The engineers will use embedded development and design methodologies appropriate to rapid prototyping. Other expected work may include: Provide specific input to the components of system design to include hardware/software trade-offs, software reuse, use of Commercial Off-the-shelf (COTS)/Government Off-the-shelf (GOTS) solutions in place of new development. Requirements analysis and synthesis from system level to individual components. Review and test firmware components for adherence to the design requirements, and document test results. Resolve software problem/deficiency reports. Active communication and participation in the full systems development lifecycle, leveraging Agile methodologies. All positions require a BS or MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering.
This position is for a mid-level engineer who will focus on low-level development like board bring-up, BSP, HAL, kernels and/or RTOS. Previous experience is desired with embedded storage technologies like NAND/NOR flash, EEPROM, MTD, eMMC. This work will include novel methods of integrating capabilities with new or existing prototypes, with the aid of tools like IDA Pro, Binary Ninja, Radare2 or OllyDbg. This role will be expected to leverage UART, SPI, I2C, JTAG, SWD, trace etc. as programming, debugging and analysis aids. Experience with cyber, RF, SDR and writing code for mobile or networking/IoT platforms is a plus.
Responsibilities and Duties
Support senior Engineering staff in development of firmware-related embedded systems capabilities from prototype development to fabrication of production code.
Support, as required, field testing and demonstration activities.
Contribute to the development of design documentation and other developmental artifacts.
Qualifications and Skills
US Citizens only
Current Top-Secret clearance with SCI eligibility
Minimum of 5 years of experience as a practicing Engineer working on embedded systems with significant firmware/bootloader/driver emphasis.
In-depth knowledge of one or more embedded systems RISC architectures such as MIPS, ARM, PPC, AVR, etc. Debug/disassembly with GDB and/or IDA Pro is a plus.
Expertise in C including building and working with embedded systems via the GNU toolchain (binutils, GCC, GDB) and embedded C standard libraries such as newlib.
In-depth understanding of embedded systems firmware concepts: cold-boot execution from reset, exception handling/ISRs, flash access, initialization and kernel/OS loading.
In-depth understanding of how to integrate new code with existing closed-source content via disassembly and debugging. Experience with IDA Pro is a significant plus.
Experience developing in a Linux environment. Proficiency with command-line editors, toolchain use, and debugging.
Demonstrated experience writing firmware/bootloaders/drivers up through running on development boards, prototypes, and/or production hardware.
Experience with common electronics laboratory test equipment (e.g. oscilloscopes, signal generators, spectrum analyzers)
Cyber/networking experience and understanding is a significant plus.
Experience with the Agile Development Methodology
