DeVry Education Group Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer in Chicago, Illinois

Reporting to the CFO, the Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer is a highly visible position within Adtalem Global Education and has primary accountability for management of the enterprise-wide accounting and reporting function as well as Adtalem’s disbursement operations. This position will partner with senior leadership to ensure priorities are aligned with organization objectives and financial controls and is responsible for preparation and review of consolidated financial statements, SEC and regulatory reporting, maintaining all accounting records, and designing and implementing financial controls and systems. This leader will be responsible for creating a high performing team in an environment that is engaging and motivating for all colleagues.

  • Responsible for all accounting functions of the organization and its institutions, including developing and maintaining the organization’s accounting, reporting, disbursement systems to effectively manage and control the business with a particular focus on timeliness and relevance of reporting and implementing financial information reporting systems

  • Oversees the monthly, quarterly and year-end accounting close processes for the organization and develops and supports management financial reporting for effective decision making

  • Ensures compliance with SEC requirements and the statements, standards, interpretations and other financial reporting guidelines issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board

  • Oversees all financial reporting functions of the organization and its institutions including Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and other regulatory reporting requirements

  • Oversees and leads development of Adtalem’s accounting policies including creation and publication of new policies and periodic review of existing policies with a focus on improvements to facilitate control, efficiency and accuracy

  • Ensures strong financial controls are in place, and maintains controls in compliance with COSO and Sarbanes-Oxley requirements. Leads all control assessments and processes

  • Informs management of issues and opportunities related to the financial or operational health of the organization

  • Oversees and maintains effective relationships with Adtalem’s internal audit and compliance functions as well as Adtalem’s independent external auditor

  • Provides input in all merger and acquisition activities, including due diligence, valuation, negotiation and integration activities

  • Selects, coaches and develops high performing teams in all areas of the function

  • Drives a strong controllership mindset throughout the organization by providing appropriate financial support in the attainment of operational goals and objectives

  • Conducts special accounting and cost studies. Provides analysis to assist in the interpretation of operating results and provides specific recommendations to support cost reduction and profit improvements

  • Presents updates of financial results and other accounting-related matters to the Audit and Finance Committee of the Board of Directors

  • Directs research and proper adoption/application of accounting pronouncements and guidance

  • Provides compliance leadership and adherence to the Adtalem Code of Ethics

  • Consults on enterprise-wide credit and collection policies and student accounts collections management

  • Participates in the evaluation of foreign currency and interest rate exposure, including the use of derivatives (hedges, swaps) to support capital structure and international expansion strategies

  • Completes other duties as assigned

  • Undergraduate accounting/finance degree and CPA is required. MBA or other advanced degree is desired

  • Minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible public and corporate accounting experience, with at least 10 years in leadership roles

  • Experience in an international multi-unit and/or multi-location environment

  • Progressive Big 4 experience prior to entering Corporate Accounting strongly preferred

  • Experience with and an interest in technical accounting research and application, including new accounting pronouncements and implementation of accounting standards

  • Strategic thinker with the capacity for increased responsibility and accountability

  • Strong analytical skills enabling complex issues to be rapidly understood and presented in an understandable manner

  • Able to effectively interact and communicate with poise and self-confidence with executive teams throughout Adtalem, the Audit and Finance Committee of the Board of Directors and Adtalem’s independent external auditor

  • Able to build and communicate a persuasive business case to stakeholders within a complex matrix environment

  • Communicates clearly and succinctly while maintaining an openness to feedback and alternative points of view. Able to use diplomacy and tact in difficult situations

  • Able to influence others and to work cross-functionally within the organization

  • Demonstrated strong decision-making skills and leadership

  • Demonstrated success in the development of a high-performing, engaged team and ability to identify and attract talent

  • This individual will have passion for the success of the organization, and the stamina to effectively communicate and evoke that passion throughout the team
