SAIC Launch Systems Engineer Senior in CHANTILLY, Virginia


SAIC has an opening for a Launch Systems Engineer who possesses a working knowledge of complex and critical launch systems and processes in order to provide expert advice and technical evaluations. Develops and coordinates requirements and provides acquisition and systems engineering expertise for current and future missions. Supports strategic planning as well as cradle-to-grave launch and launch support activities. Navigates challenges associated with multiple new entrant launch service providers and appropriate separation of proprietary information while maintaining horizontal integration of requirements to assure compatibility across multiple launch systems. Ensures thorough and consistent implementation of systems engineering processes.

Specific duties include:

  • Review, document, and trace functional and interfacerequirements for all customer-allocated missions and coordinates withexternal entities when necessary to resolve issues

  • Review verification and validation processes andactivities and identify risks, opportunities, and corresponding mitigationor implementation milestones.

  • Identify and coordinate new requirements, captureemerging risks and recommend plans of action consistent with customer strategicgoals

  • Retain cognizance over launch related studies andprovide leadership with timely and relevant assessments

  • Maintain familiarity with customer strategic roadmapand updates to US space policy

  • Provide recommendations/products that reflect best pathfor thecustomer based on extensive launch experience

  • Perform technical assessments and evaluations of launchand SV integration requirements based on engineering analysis and reviewof systems, including technology issues

  • Identify desired enhancements and assess viability froma programmatic, business and acquisition execution perspective

  • Support contractor technical and programmatic reviewsto assess progress, issues and meeting mission requirementstraceability

  • Support customer program initiatives evaluating,certifying, and fostering relationships with emerging launch vehiclecompanies

  • Perform requirements planning tasks including reviewingand providing technical evaluations to key mission contractualdocumentation

  • Verify recommended acquisition approaches areexecutable within resource constraints and mission integration risks areidentified and mitigated to low risk level

  • Assess new entrant’s capabilities and processes

  • Develop acquisition strategies and documents to procurelaunch services

  • Evaluate mission specification requirements and assessadequacy of verification data/actions

  • Provide support in preparing for and conducting allrequired meetings, briefings, and readiness reviews

  • Assess strategic impacts of proposed launch vehiclefleet changes

  • Support annual budget planning and execution reviews,as well as technical and programmatic meetings

  • Interface with key mission partners and otherstakeholder groups

  • Provide horizontal engineering focus from a customermissionperspective

  • Support launch vehicle acquisition process includingbooster procurement and mission integration activities


Clearance required to start: TS/SCI with Polygraph

Clearance required to remain on the program TS/SCI with Polygraph


  • Bachelor Degree (STEM) or extended relevant experience

  • 9 years space launch experience

  • 5 years government acquisition experience

  • 2 years customer experience

  • Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships with other government agencies and mission partners

  • Working knowledge of launch policy, processes, and procedures

  • Working knowledge of the acquisition lifecycle requirements and budgeting and financial processes

TYPICAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors and nine (9) years or more experience; Masters and seven (7) years or more experience ; PhD or JD and four (4) years or more experience.
