Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Director, Pathways Operations in Boston, Massachusetts

The Department of Business Initiatives and Alliances directs and supports Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s mission of innovative, high-quality, high-value, patient-centered oncology care. The Pathways Department is responsible for the development, support, and implementation of providing system-wide clinical decision support through the pathways program.

Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Pathways Operations, the Director of Pathways Solutions is responsible for the oversight and implementation of the Dana-Farber Pathways program. The Pathways program aims to foster innovation and lead change in our current cancer care delivery model through innovative solutions that include clinical decision support, analytics, value, improved care coordination, team engagement, follow-up and communication among all different stakeholders and tying new payment methodologies to align incentives.

Management of the Pathways program involves negotiating with external vendors, creating interventions and designing models for effective improvement of clinical outcomes for oncology care, contributing to building sustainable infrastructures, processes and systems that increase efficiencies and effectiveness. This position requires being familiar with population management, treatment of oncology diagnoses, institutional structure, strategic planning and implementation, data analytics, informatics, IT infrastructure and development, and leveraging big data sources (clinical and administrative) to manage the oncology population.


  • Serve as liaison to executives to translate their strategic and operational priorities to the pathways program to meet internal and external commercialization efforts.

  • Facilitate executive leadership in key decisions from problem statement to final product

  • Serve as business owner for major program projects, including but not limited to, pay for performance, employer-based initiatives, internal improvement efforts

  • Set priorities, timelines and allocates resources required to meet those priorities

  • Develop program infrastructure (workplans, timelines, milestones); ensures accountability and follow-up

  • Oversee and direct complex prioritization and facilitation sessions within and between business units negotiating independently

  • Serve as the lead between the Institute and Pathways platform vendor, effectively negotiating on behalf of the program to ensure business needs are met

  • Manage and mitigate risks: anticipate, identify, manage, and resolve risk to the program, its milestones, timeline, or financial projections; reports and escalates as needed

  • Make independent decisions and oversees actions of others; exercises substantial judgment on behalf of the Institute. Exercises latitude and directs substantial DFCI resources

  • Partner with Pathways Medical Director to direct the management and oversight of clinical teams to ensure programmatic needs are met and resources appropriately allocated

  • Financial Management:

  • In collaboration with the Senior Director, manages operating budget for the program. This includes physician incentive packages, revenue streams intake as well as programmatic oversight

  • Develop and monitor the budgets for the Department, and prepare reports as requested by the department leadership

  • Oversee the preparation of and sign off of purchase orders

  • Assure compliance with DFCI policies, procedures, requirements and ensures safe, efficient and effective delivery of quality care, in collaboration with Institute leaders

  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Hires, mentors and advises, assigns and evaluates work, recommends promotion and salary adjustments, takes corrective action when necessary

  • Distributing workload amongst the team to ensure they are challenged while at the same time given an achievable workload

  • Setting yearly goals for their individual reports, reviewing them on a regular basis and performing year end reviews

  • Emphasizing the importance of keeping a healthy work & live balance and promote a culture of inclusion, collaboration and participation.

  • Works with Senior Director and Pathways Medical Director to set departmental policies

  • Mentors staff to refine skills in communicating effectively, influencing stakeholders, executing work and driving momentum, analyzing information, problem solving, networking, public speaking and collaboration.

  • Manage programmatic space assignments


Manages a team of 5-10 project managers, data scientists and business analysts (direct reports and dotted line reports).

  • Bachelor’s degree required. MBA, MHA (or equivalent) degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 10+ years of experience in health care strategy, business planning, and project management; experience in a health care and/or consulting environment is highly desirable.

  • Minimum 5+ years of supervisory/management experience required.


  • Demonstrated experience using data to support financial and business decisions.

  • Ability to work with all levels of the organization and build consensus to get results.

  • Strong leadership and management skills, as well as the ability to work closely and effectively with all levels of the organization; Politically savvy and able to balance multiple agendas and demands

  • Exceptional planning, strategy, project management, negotiation, analytic and organizational skills, with the demonstrated ability to drive multiple concurrent streams to completion in a complex, deadline-driven environment.

  • Ability to handle a great degree of uncertainty and ambiguity; flexible with changes in prioritization.

  • Maintains balance between attention to detail to ensure high quality deliverables, and ability to think and operate from a broader strategic lens

  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently on new and existing projects

  • Strong client/results orientation, and effective teamwork and interpersonal skills

  • Exceptional communication skills; must possess the ability to converse effectively and comfortably, prepare proposals, analysis and other documents in a manner readily assimilated by target audiences.

  • Ability to analyze and implement negotiated contracts

  • Demonstrates self-awareness, professionalism, a strong work ethic and the ability to handle difficult situations with grace and a sense of humor.
