The Principal Chemical Engineer will be responsible for leading the development of new technology within the corporate Advanced Research and Development organization. This role will require the use of chemical engineering fundamentals, test design and execution, presentation and project management skills to deliver new and value-added solutions to a successful business. Responsibilities within this role include:

  • Serve as a technical lead in fiber technology investigations that provide value added solutions to identified industrial needs

  • Lead a culture of “delivery” with others in the group and drive projects to completion

  • Keep up to date with industrial and academic advances in fiber creation technology and new media technology

  • Identify industrial needs through direct customer interaction and communication throughout a broad cross-section of the Donaldson organization

  • Assist in business case development for new research programs and potential product developments

  • Support the development and validation of new filter materials in a manner that will maintain or improve the company's product leadership position

  • Manage relationship and workload of external technology partners to augment research capacity or fulfill specific needs to accelerate project completion

  • Conduct and lead others in lab experimentation to support the application of new fiber technology or surface functionalization

  • Develop and execute project plans in a timely manner that culminate in the delivery of a viable technology that is readily applicable to an industrial need

  • Effectively communicate project status and plans to department leadership and internal customers

Desired education and experience includes:

  • Masters or PhD degree in Chemical or Polymer Engineering

  • 5 plus years of polymer synthetic chemistry skills in an engineering environment

  • Demonstrated technical leadership and project management skills

Knowledge and skillset must include:

  • Strict adherence to safety practices in the lab environment including use & disposal of solvents, polymers, and other chemicals

  • Polymer modification and synthesis

  • Polymer and monomer characterization

  • Surface modification and cross-linking

  • Planning and operating within a shared lab environment

  • Test design and qualification of materials produced

  • Proper test documentation and records keeping

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with a wide variety of company personnel and others outside of the company

  • Management of external research partners

  • Experience with electrospinning or fiber generation processes preferable
