eBay Sr. Director, Shipping Engineering in Bellevue, Washington

We are looking to reinvent shipping and change ecommerce, around the globe. Given the massive number of transactions going through eBay ($95B GMV in 2018), we are positioned better than anyone else in the world to optimize ecommerce shipping experience at scale. We are looking for a leader who can drive the shipping technology strategy and execution for eBay.

The Sr. Director, Shipping Engineering will be responsible for leading the engineering evolution and execution of our global shipping technology. This leader will drive innovation in technology that will create experiences on the eBay platform for consumers who sell individual items out of their home and for businesses that run multi-employee organizations. This leader will have responsibility for front-end facing customer tools that are multiscreen spanning web, native apps, and mobile/Web and the integration of services and APIs which help larger businesses and sellers thrive on the eBay marketplace platform. S/he will be responsible for recruiting, retaining, and scaling a high-performing global team of 70+ engineering leaders and their team members.

The ideal candidate can drive high performing engineering teams in a global setting, understands what makes product work on mobile devices, on the web, and in the hearts and minds of sellers and buyers. This leader brings experience working with or comfort working on, APIs, feeds, or tools that enable large-scale business level integrations and has built a marketplace reputation for making an impact at scale. At eBay, we have become increasingly focused on hand-crafting the customer experience. This leader will have a deep passion for perfecting the end-to-end experience across a diverse set of teams, disciplines, and platform technologies.


  • Create a global multi-year vision, strategy and execution plan to build and scale shipping technology.

  • Lead and grow a global team of engineers to set the roadmap and deliverables to optimize and enhance the eBay experience for buyers & sellers.

  • Define, launch, and manage programs and features that enable customers to choose the delivery offering that best meet their needs and always delivers an exceptional customer experience.

  • Define the architecture for a multi-screen seller platform that enables global commerce, cross-border trade, and seamless localized seller/buyer experiences around the world.

  • Ensure eBay ideas are sound, designs are spotless, execution is flawless, and focus remains on developing exceptional products that will delight eBay customers.

  • Partner with the business, product, analytics, user experience and marketing teams (in San Jose, Europe, Australia and Asia), to understand business objectives, customer segmentation, and usage patterns and trends.

  • Partner closely with regional leaders and teams to create products that support innovation globally.

  • Establish best practices for software development, including Agile and other lean model development and testing strategies to accelerate time to market.

  • Provide technical direction for a world-class Quality Engineering and Quality Assurance function.

  • Recruit, develop and mentor world-class engineering talent.


  • Proven technology leader and innovator, with a track record of developing successful and widely respected consumer web and mobile products globally.

  • Track record in building and growing highly effective engineering team .

  • Lead a collaborative product environment that excels in partnering with business and product partners.

  • Shipping and logistics technology experience is an advantage.

  • Experience building and shipping large-scale online services for consumers

  • Highly motivated to excel with an intrinsic drive for continuous improvement.

  • Driven to tackle hard problems, and solve for potential breakthrough product and features

  • Have a track record of developing solid personal relationships with partners.

  • Willing to take risks and make decisions with imperfect information.
