The Department of Oncology is seeking a Research Specialist II that will work in a laboratory that will focus on the study of pediatric leukemia. As a translational research laboratory, our goal is to increase our understanding of this disease from a scientific perspective in order to better the health of patients now and in the future. The candidate will be able to work on multiple research projects simultaneously while overseeing laboratory operations on a daily basis.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee laboratory operations, including but not limited to: ordering and stocking supplies, ensuring laboratory safety, maintaining data and inventory spreadsheets, training new employees, updating protocols, researching/implementing new technologies as needed, maintaining a clean laboratory space;

  • Manage the extensive inventory of biological specimens entering the laboratory;

  • Oversee laboratory compliance with regulatory requirements and JHU standards, policies and procedures;

  • Develop experimental designs;

  • Responsibility for planning, implementation, evaluation, interpretation of results;

  • Compile, analyze, interpret research data using various computer software applications; Conduct library research;

  • Participate in editing/preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication;

  • Process human blood and bone marrow specimens as described in ongoing clinical trials;

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficient in RNA/DNA/Protein isolation, PCR, qPCR, ELISA, SDS-PAGE, immunoblotting, tissue culture, electrophoresis, among others;

  • Design controlled experiments independently;

  • Oversight/training of new lab employees;

  • Ability to perform established laboratory assays with initial supervision of senior personnel until capable of performing those assays independently;

  • Familiarity with the operation of laboratory equipment such as PCR machines, centrifuges, pH meters, analytical balances, incubators, spectrophotometers, microscopes, imaging systems and laminar flow hoods;

  • Familiarity with aseptic technique;

  • Familiarity with theory behind experiments and ability to apply analytical skills to interpret experiments, including positive and negative controls;

Qualfications:

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field and a minimum of 2 years of experience required. Master's degree with related graduate research may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
