Maryland government jobs UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE ASSOCIATE I in Baltimore County, Maryland


This is a contractual (hourly) position with an annual renewal option available.

Main Purpose of Job

To review, assign and adjust tax rates to Maryland employers in accordance with the employment law.


Adjudicate potentially disqualifying Unemployment Insurance issues in accordance with established guidelines and to prove high quality customer service complaints who have been overpaid benefits.

Conduct fact finding interviews with claimants, employers and other interested parties, compiling the information into a written document and making determination as to the claimants’ eligibility for past or future benefits. May be called upon to represent the agency in unemployment insurance appeal hearings. Would be required to assist claimants with questions and concerns about overpaid benefits.

Candidate would work in a fast paced high volume work environment. Work duration would be dependent upon workload.

Intermittent employment is limited to 40 hours per week not to exceed 80 hours per biweekly pay period


Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a State high school equivalence certificate.

Experience: One year full-time paid employment in the Maryland State classification of Unemployment Insurance Claims Aide III or equivalent classification in the Employment Security Administration.


Six (6) months experience in interviewing claimants, employers and other parties of interest to collect essential information. Proficient with word processing and data entry, ability to effectively communicate, strong customer service orientation.


All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (MDOL/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to MDOL/DUI as a result of unemployment insurance overpayment/fraud. Any unpaid debt may have an impact on whether or not a candidate is offered employment.

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (on average 130 hours per month), may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.

As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one (1) hour every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
