_Job Summary:_

The University of Colorado School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Section of Emergency Medicine in conjunction with Children's Hospital Colorado (CHCO) is seeking general pediatricians committed to the care of acutely ill and injured children to staff our CHCO Network of Care (NOC). The CHCO NOC consists of 5 locations in the Denver metro area that provide emergency medicine and urgent care services to over 80,000 children annually. We are closely allied with our Level 1 ED located at the Anschutz Campus that sees an additional 80,000 pts annually.

You can expect an average of 4 shifts a week incorporating bedside teaching of medical students and residents; Emergency Medicine Section engagement through monthly meetings, continuing education/skills maintenance and participation in hospital Quality Improvement; and a fast-paced environment in which to use your knowledge of pediatric illness and injury patterns. Candidates should have experience with reading plain films, foreign body removal, suturing, incision and drainage, lumbar puncture and experience or interest in procedural sedation.

_Examples of Work Performed:_

  • Provide clinical coverage in a mixed shift model (days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays) for a 24/7 Urgent and Emergency care network including Anschutz ED. Clinical responsibilities include:

o Pediatric urgent and emergency care

o Pediatric observation unit medicine

o Rotating sick-call (Jeopardy) coverage

  • Clinical teaching of Medical Students, Family Practice Residents and Pediatric Residents

  • Further involvement in medical education available, though not required, includes:

o Mentoring of a University of Colorado Medical School student in the Foundations on Doctoring program through their experience at CU SOM.

o Lectures or clinical skills sessions with medical students and/or resident

o Clinical Supervision and support of onboarding for Advanced Practice Providers

o Attendance and participation in combined NOC/Section of Emergency Medicine, Morbidity and Mortality Conference, CME and local site meetings (attendance required and varies by meeting).

o Committee membership at Hospital, Departmental and Section levels is encouraged

o Participation in Quality Improvement and development of Clinical Care Guidelines is encouraged

o Maintenance of skills required for provision of high quality, patient centered, safe urgent/emergent care of children.

**

/Annual requirements include but may not be limited to:/

  • Half-day per academic year working with anesthesia to maintain airway skills.

  • Two half-day Acute Care Education sessions put on by the Section per academic year.

  • One high fidelity code simulation at the Simulation Center at CHCO and at least one code simulation at a local NOC site per academic year.

  • Maintenance of PALS certification

  • Maintenance of CME relevant to clinical work

  • Attend other technical seminars as deemed mandatory by the section and/or practice site in conjunction with input from the Director, Urgent Care Pediatricians.



*Minimum Qualifications:*

  • MD or DO degree

  • Completed an accredited residency in Pediatrics or combined Medicine-Pediatrics

  • Board Certified or eligible in Pediatrics

  • Active certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support

  • Active Colorado Medical License or will have at time of hire

  • Active Colorado State DEA license or will have at time of hire

_Preferred Qualifications:_

  • 2 or more years' experience in pediatric acute care environment (OR completing a Pediatric Residency program with significant experience in Urgent and Emergency Care and electives and/or extra-clinical activities that demonstrate clear interest in pediatric urgent and emergency care)

  • Experience teaching medical students and residents

  • Previous experience with Quality Improvement or development of Clinical Care Guidelines

_Competencies:_

/Knowledge/

  • Advanced understanding of pediatric disease and injury patterns

  • Understanding of and familiarity with resources to assist in making clinical decisions and diagnosis

  • Familiarity with EMTALA law

/Skills/

  • Use of electronic medical record (EPIC)

  • Teaching of medical learners

  • Effectively and respectfully field calls from referring physicians to facilitate referral to site appropriate for presenting problem/service requested and transport to site

Technical skills

  • Interpretation of plain radiographs

  • Foreign body removal

  • Laceration repair, including vermillion border and nail bed repair (some advanced techniques can be learned on job)

  • Incision and drainage

  • Reduction of minor digit fractures or joint dislocations (can be learned on job)

  • Nerve blocks

  • Lumbar puncture

  • IV fluid management of electrolyte and endocrine derangements

  • Acute respiratory care

  • Intubation (ongoing yearly skills training mandatory)

  • Pediatric resuscitation (must maintain PALS certification and complete required annual mock resuscitations)

  • Pediatric Transport. Able to appropriately decide what transport services are required to transfer a patient to a higher level care for management of an acute problem or for further care post resuscitation.

  • Procedural Sedation (do not need to hold previous credentials, but must obtain credentialing at CHCO. Process in place for education and assisting with obtaining credentials.)

/Abilities/

  • Work efficiently in a fast paced, acute care environment for 8-12 hours at a time

  • Promote teamwork amongst nurses, techs, learners and colleagues

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Supervision of Advanced Practice Providers and medical learners while managing own patients

  • Work a mix of days, evening, overnights, weekend and holiday shifts

_Conditions of Employment:_

  • Must successfully pass a 10-panel drug test through Children's Hospital Colorado

  • Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal and sex-offender background check
