The Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Colorado in Denver is seeking a fulltime exempt (non-hourly) Instructor-Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner. This is a unique opportunity to work in an academic and clinical orthopedic surgery practice. The position will be based out of the UCHealth Broomfield (BFH) Hospital assisting various orthopedic specialties with surgery. The position is not eligible for tenure.
_Examples of Work Performed_
This is a position requiring interest in Orthopedic Surgery.The applicant must be self-directed, detail-oriented, and adaptable in an often high-intensity and fluid environment.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required. The expectation is for gradually increasing levels of independence as their skills and knowledge increase.
- Assists in providing pre-op, intra-op and post-op care, including:
Preoperative: Writes/updates appropriate notes, obtains H&P and examines patients, assists with consents, prepares orders (including those for narcotics and other scheduled drugs), provide preoperative education/counseling
Intraoperative: Assists with positioning, draping, retraction, closing, splinting, and other aspects of procedures as appropriate.
Postoperative: Writes orders, helps prepare patient for discharge, provides information to family and patient, acts as liaison to floor/PACU for surgical management questions/needs, coordinates with office/administrative staff as needed to coordinate follow-up and meet specific patient needs
- Helps manage inpatient care, e.g.,
Obtains detailed history and performs physical examinations on assigned patients
Assesses and treats acute/chronic medical problems and provides direct patient care
Enters notes into the medical record, e.g. progress notes, event notes, documentation of calls, etc.
Write prescriptions/orders for medications, PT, OT, imaging studies, and DME as needed
Complete FMLA and other forms and school notes as needed
Coordinates care with hospitalist and consulting services
May have occasional scheduled weekend rounding responsibilities – no more than 1-2 weekends per month (currently none)
- Assists with inpatient and ER consults, as needed
Coordinates care with orthopedic attendings
Obtains history, examines, and evaluates patients
Provides basic education to patient as needed
Performs reductions as appropriate
Performs basic procedures such as joint aspirations, laceration repairs, cultures, as appropriate
Applies splints, casts, dressings, and braces as appropriate
- Assist with a BFH-associated clinic
Preoperative screening, e.g., review histories, order labs, diagnostic imaging, and studies as appropriate
Possible postop patient visits
Possible new patients interested in orthopedic care at BFH or referred for evaluation
Coordinates with other clinics to ensure smooth progression of care
- Patient education classes
Help organize and administer a Joint Reconstruction patient education and preparatory session at BFH
Potentially help direct/organize additional patient education initiatives
Performs emergency lifesaving procedures in cases such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, massive hemorrhage, or similar emergencies, as appropriate
Becomes proficient with electronic health record systems, prescription monitoring database, and other frequently utilized systems. Must be willing to act as a resource to other providers
Maintains adequate communication with attending physicians on call, relevant house staff and fellows, supervising physician; particularly with respect to any unusual, unexpected, or complex issues requiring direct physician consultation or intervention
Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
May participate in training and supervision of medical students, residents, fellows, mid-level students and other health professional students engaged in clinical activity.
Enhances their own professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature,in-servicemeetings and workshops.
Assists with relevant research and quality activities on-site, e.g. collection of registry/outcomes data, collection of surgical tissue samples for biobank, administration of patient surveys
Assists with relevant community outreach events, e.g. with organizing, planning, and attending educational sessions
If interested, may have opportunity to assist with research-related activities such as preparing powerpoint slide presentations, assisting with manuscripts
Willing to performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned and as appropriate
Participates in review sessions to ensure appropriate development, correction, and feedback to supervisors and to create opportunities for service-line improvements.

State of Colorado Certified Physician Assistant or Inclusion on the State of Colorado Advanced Practice Registry as an Advance Practice Nurse; Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants or certification by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification; certification pending, as documented by temporary certificate.
Experience preferred. May be willing to train new grad with previous hospital/orthopedic experience or exceptional qualities
Bachelor's degree in a related Technical, Scientific, or Engineering discipline
6 months to 1 year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
