_Job Summary_

The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is seeking applicants for a full time (1.0 FTE) Instructor to work as a pediatric optometrist in our expanding academic ophthalmology practice within Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO). The position will provide outpatient routine eye examinations, specialty contact lens fitting, medical and perioperative management of pediatric ophthalmic disorders and, when necessary, offer consultation with other specialties within Children’s Hospital Colorado and affiliate sites of practice throughout the Denver metropolitan area.



_Examples of Work Performed_

  1. Direct patient care in outpatient setting 4.5 days/wk.

  2. Provide specialty contact lens fittings.

  3. Provide eye clinic consultations for Emergency dept. and other specialties within the hospital.

  4. Serve as a preceptor for the CHCO Pediatric Optometry Residency program.

  5. Serve as an eye care specialist for in-hospital educational lectures or workshops.



_Salary and Benefits:_

The hiring salary for this position is negotiable and commensurate with skills and experience. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

_Minimum Qualifications_

1). Completion of an approved residency program in Pediatric Optometry or have obtained comparable experience in a pediatric eye care setting.

2). A valid Colorado optometric license, or able to obtain one.

3). Knowledge and proficiency in primary eye examinations in children ages 0-18. (Experience examining children with special needs is highly recommended)

4). Experience in infant aphakic and scleral contact lens fitting is required.

5). Knowledge and proficiency in diagnosing and managing common pediatric ophthalmic disorders.

6). Knowledge and proficiency in perioperative management of strabismus.



_Desired Qualifications_

Experience in an academic and/or pediatric hospital-based clinical environment is preferred.



_Required Competencies/Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities_

  1. Consistent retinoscopy and prescribing guidelines.

  2. Evidence-based amblyopia and strabismus management protocols.

  3. Specialty contact lens fittings (with or without technical support for insertion and removal training).

  4. Proficiency in secondary medical management of pediatric ophthalmic disorders (including selection and interpretation of ancillary diagnostic testing).



_Professional Field_

OD with approved residency training in pediatric optometry or experience in optometry in a pediatric optometry/ophthalmology setting.



_Supervision Received_

The position will report directly to Robert Enzenauer, MD, Professor and Chair of Pediatric Ophthalmology.



_Supervision Exercised_

Position will assume limited supervision of current Pediatric Optometry Fellow.
