Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the School of Medicine, with nearly 1,100 faculty, including 147 PhDs and 33 MD/PhDs, in 16 divisions. Faculty are key leaders in fulfilling all missions of the school. With nearly $100M in current research funding, the department consistently ranks among the country’s top 25 departments of medicine in NIH research funding. Clinical activity has doubled during the past eight years. Faculty are fully committed to all stages of medical education from first-year medical students through residency and fellowship. The department has nearly 200 residents and a similar number of clinical and research fellows. The department has 41 endowed chairs and consistently ranks among the best in the nation by /US News & World Report /in pulmonary medicine, endocrinology, and several other disciplines. The department’s faculty are also active participants and leaders in federal study sections and academic societies.

POSITION SUMMARY

The University of Colorado School of Medicine seeks a Chair to lead the scientific, clinical, and educational programs of the Department of Medicine, with an emphasis on expanding the excellence, diversity, and collaboration within the School and with our partners. The Chair is responsible for overseeing operations and strategy across the department and its centers and programs. The Chair provides leadership and oversight in the development of centers of excellence, supports outstanding clinical programs, and inspires and guides groundbreaking clinical, translational and basic research.

This position requires a dynamic, passionate, and experienced physician-scientist and administrative leader with a proven record of success in an academic setting. The ideal candidate has demonstrated capability across the spectrum of individual scholarship, collaborative academic leadership, clinical and research program development, educational excellence, successful faculty recruitment and retention, community engagement, and will have designed, implemented and integrated effective programs across complex organizations. In leading the Department of Medicine, the Chair must have a vision aligned with the strategic plan of the University of Colorado School of Medicine and the Anschutz Medical Campus.

The Chair leads through innovation, with effective management of department resources, and by leveraging School of Medicine assets. The Chair also works collaboratively with diverse leaders of the School of Medicine and the Anschutz Medical Campus, including fellow Chairs, administrators, faculty, and staff. The Chair demonstrates a personal communication style, integrity, and professionalism that fosters an environment of trust, teamwork, equity and accountability, as well as personal behavior that fosters innovation and excellence for all constituents within the organization.

The Chair serves on the School of Medicine Executive Committee and on the board of University of Colorado Medicine, which is a 501(c)(3) corporation that provides practice and business management services for nearly 3,000 faculty physicians and advanced practice providers of the CU School of Medicine.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In collaboration with the leadership of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, provides visionary and innovative leadership for the department’s next phase of growth and development.

  • Define and lead the department’s research strategy together with the Dean. Support principal investigators and other faculty within the department in their efforts to secure NIH and other grant funding in support of research priorities. Ensure deliberate investment into research activities and priorities within the department to promote growth and facilitate future success.

  • Provide the vision and leadership to achieve superior clinical programs within medicine and associated disciplines. Work closely and collaboratively with the leadership at clinical affiliates, particularly UCHealth, to build, grow, and integrate areas of acknowledged clinical excellence with outstanding quality and outcomes and patient satisfaction, while continuing to deliver value.

  • Assure delivery of excellent clinical education and advanced training to medical students, residents, and fellows. Provide leadership and oversight to the residency and fellowship programs within the department.

  • Supervise, prepare, implement, and monitor the department budget so that it encompasses all funding sources and ensures compliance with grant, legislative and institutional guidelines.

  • Recruit, hire, and retain outstanding faculty from diverse backgrounds within the subspecialties of medicine. Ensure an atmosphere of professional support and development.

  • Encourage ethical medical and financial practice across the department. Support and ensure compliance activities.

IDEAL EXPERIENCE

Experience as a successful administrative leader at an academic institution

Service as a division chief, vice chair, or chair of medicine who has developed academic leaders, mentored and developed junior faculty, and identified and recruited diverse students, trainees, staff and faculty. Understanding of the complex financial pressures facing academic medical centers and health care delivery organizations. Experience and ability to work within a complex network of facilities. Must meet the requirements for a faculty appointment at the Professor level.

Growing research programs

Experience leading a successful research program, either clinical or lab-based, with proven track record of significant growth in funding, publications and national or international reputation. Must be capable of defining the research vision for the entire department and providing basic research and grant mentorship.

Expanding and fostering strong clinical programs

Experience leading complex clinical programs focused on access, high quality, and outstanding patient satisfaction. Must have experience as a leader within a competitive clinical environment. Vision to recognize areas for growth and ability to lead and support faculty as they develop new opportunities. Experience with strategies to control and reduce cost of care (length of stay, appropriate use of facilities and resources).

National reputation for personal academic accomplishments

A record of scholarly academic accomplishments as reflected in number and impact of publications, history of successful research funding, and service in national and international societies.

M.D. degree and board certification in internal medicine

Licensed or eligible for medical licensing in Colorado. Continuous American Board of Medicine certification.

Another critical factor affecting academic medicine is the downward pressures on overall research funding and the increased need for cross-disciplinary projects and programs.   • Stay current on local, regional, and national healthcare delivery policies in order to run an operationally and financially strong department;

  • Identify and meet with key stakeholders to engage in regular dialogue that reaches final conclusions through consensus, and that recognizes negotiating to reach a compromise is necessary to achieve institutional results; and

  • Develop explicit understanding of relationships that are most important to the School of Medicine and its stakeholders and affiliate hospitals, and build a network around prioritizing these relationships.

  • Engagement in public relations and philanthropic activities to promote and enhance the visibility of and support for the department.
