Job Description:

NOTE: The desired reporting location for this position is the Athens Service Center with option of AEP Ohio Headquarters (700 Morrison Road, Gahanna, OH 43230) depending on the home location or the selected candidate.

Position Summary:

Manage one or more intermediate and/or complex projects within a matrix team environment; Provide leadership, direction, training, coordination, and effective communication to initiate, plan, execute, monitor and control, and close projects in a safe, efficient, economical, risk-balanced approach to achieve short and long range goals and to obtain maximum customer satisfaction. Develop relationships and effectively communicate with all stakeholders including internal customers, external customers, team members, suppliers, contractors, vendors, and industry peers., Perform supervisory duties and responsibilities if direct reports are assigned.

Principal Accountabilities:

Plan, organize, direct, coordinate and supervise assigned project and outage work activities.

Support and hold employees and contractors accountable to AEP safety policies and standards, ensuring a safe working environment focused on \"Commitment to Zero Harm\".

Develop, review and coordinate the project/outage plan, schedule, budget, tools, and staff, becoming proficient in most if not all knowledge areas of project plans.

Effectively communicate project/outage details and status updates; Lead planning meetings and project/outage updates with significant contributing role in stakeholder presentations; Provide clear and concise written reports.

Develop effective working relationships with the project team, operating company staff, internal and external customers or partners, contractors, vendors, and suppliers; Foster teamwork and seek customer satisfaction.

Provide specific guidance, instruction, and training to improve design, systems, procedures, schedules, and costs.

Ensure maximum customer satisfaction and demonstrate effective and efficient performance of project/outage work activities.

May supervise employees, as assigned, including duties such as completion of well written performance plans; Provide support to direct reports in their development activities.

Minimum Requirements:

NOTE: This position will be filled at the title and salary grade level commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate as compared to the minimum education/experience requirements stated below.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business or related field of study with three (3) years' qualified experience (5 years for consideration at senior level); or Associate’s Degree in the same required disciplines with five (5) years of qualified experience (7 years for consideration at senior level) (see below).

Experience: Includes work in these areas: Major Construction Field Experience, Project Estimating, Project Controls, Project Engineering, and/or comparable external experience in a competitive production environment

Licenses/Certifications: Project Management Professional (PMP) registration, or equivalent, preferred


Demonstrated understanding of distribution operations, design and construction, as well as fundamental knowledge of stations, control and transmission systems is beneficial.

Trained in areas of construction safety, negotiations, scope development and control, cost estimating, construction contracting, project controls and reporting, quality control, risk management, etc.

Individuals in this position may also be assigned the PM role on a project for further development depending on the level of project management knowledge, experience, and leadership competency including successful completion of PMP Certification.


Develop and provide effective leadership, team building and meeting management skills as outlined in PM BOK and the AEP leadership competencies and values. Develop a high level of confidence in the ability, and demonstrate the motivation and attitude, to lead a team and a project to successful conclusion.

Effectively communicate, including the use of effective listening, with all stakeholders including team members, sponsors, management and senior management.

Develop understanding of, and begin to apply, economic analysis techniques and business acumen with an emphasis on overall project cost, schedule, and risk.

Develop understanding of the Engineering & Design, Procurement, Contracting, Estimating, Construction and Startup procedures and processes and begin to influence optimization of a project. Begin to ensure project team utilizes the latest applicable guidelines and requirements.

Ability to apply working knowledge of PMBOK Project Management tools and techniques.

Develop and apply learned skillsets in strategic thinking, planning, risk assessment and prioritization of project activities. Globally view the project from all angles such as safety, constructability, sequence, changing conditions, contingencies, contractual, predictability, level of priority, sense of direction and sense of productivity to quickly identify and to avoid or to mitigate project risks.

Organization of project activities, delegate project task assignments, confidently set team requirements and expectations to manage deliverables and hold team members accountable. Become proficient in providing constructive feedback to team members.

Conflict management skills to provide solutions to issues that maximize synergies with an overriding goal to do the \"right thing\" for the company. Become proficient in knowing when to elevate an issue for resolution.

Strong understanding of scope management, risk balanced technical options, and project risk factors and mitigation methods.

Understand contract components and development process to be able to provide general input and some oversight.

Act with integrity by demonstrating accountability for project assignments.

Travel throughout AEP Ohio Service Territory should be expected regularly.
