JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY:

Responsible for the overall strategic direction, financial performance and management of the company, promoting a culture of safety and ethical business practice, driving operational results through the local management team, and promoting the highest level of customer service. The President is responsible for overseeing all operational interests of the Company through accountability and continuous improvement initiatives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Strategic

  • Drives Company strategic goals, in alignment with parent company objectives.
  • Sets strategy and direction consistent with corporate guidelines and the strategic plan.
  • Leverages the Company's market niche and service offerings.
  • Directs formulation of commercial objectives.
  • Targets, establishes and maintains key customer, community, competitor and political business relationships.
  • Directs due diligence and business development activities to improve or expand operations.
  • Identifies trend, technologies, efficiencies, synergies, acquisition, alliance and partnership targets.
  • Develops and maintains industry, market and competitor intelligence and analysis.
  • Participates in the capital acquisition, maintenance, vessel modification and divestiture strategy, consistent with the corporate fleet maintenance strategic plan.
  • Champions safety efforts to insure an effective HSQE program in accordance with Company goals and corporate guidelines.
  • Establishes, improves and leverages key performance indicators driving operational performance.
  • Leads continuous technological and operational improvement to drive increases in sales performance, revenue.
  • Establishes and maintains positive customer and public relations through operational improvements, organization development initiatives, and the nurturing of relationships.
  • Promotes Company values, safety culture, ethical standards of behavior, continuous improvement, accountability, and employee engagement.

Profit & Loss Responsibility

  • Prepares, implements, manages and adapts financial plan based upon market requirements, paying special attention to variable costs.
  • Takes remedial action when negative trends are identified within actuals vs. plan.
  • Directs operational and commercial activities on revenue projects to define work scope, estimates, and operational parameters for speculative jobs and new business opportunities.
  • Develops support documentation for potential contracts.
  • Interfaces with customers, regulatory agencies, port officials, federal, state and local inspectors, pilots and others to ensure proper representation and to enhance the position of the Company.

Operations

  • Through the local leadership team, oversees management of all deck, engine and cargo functions, and tracking and maintenance of all fleet and shoreside assets.
  • Through the local leadership team, directs overall utilization and scheduling of tugs and barges in the local fleet.
  • Interfaces with customers, marine & shoreside employees, vendors, pilots, and regulatory officials.
  • Directs local leadership team in supervision of personnel involved in field projects including special shipments and salvage operations.
  • Oversees casualty investigations.
  • Acts as the Incident Commander during emergency response activities.
  • Executes special projects and verifies safety and operational assumptions, ensuring appropriate training of personnel and accurate project monitoring.

Corporate Compliance

  • Directs and monitors adherence to standard operating procedures, safety policies, federal and state regulatory and licensing, and training requirements to ensure personnel and vessel compliance consistent with Company ISO/ISM/SMS/VMP programs.
  • Ensures compliance with facility security protocols.
  • Initiates and oversees all incident investigations per Company and customer requirements.
  • Acts as the Company representative at federal, state and local committees, industry functions, and boards and/or meetings.
  • Interprets and administers governmental regulations.

Supervisory and Leadership

  • Responsible for all employment decisions in the Company, including hiring, crewing, training, development, promotion, discipline and termination.
  • Directs, motivates and develops the leadership team toward achievement of Company goals.
  • Builds, cultivates and develops a high performance team, including providing regular performance feedback and conducting employee evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Proactively communicates updates about the Company to the parent company.
  • Ensures communication of Company information to crews and shoreside staff.

  • Provides direction and leadership to achieve Company core values, mission and safety vision.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Maritime background with a thorough understanding of the day-to-day operations of vessels, their limits, their capabilities and both internal characteristics and external factors influencing them.
  • Understanding of the individual roles, interactions and responsibilities of crewmembers manning the vessels.
  • Able to develop a command of the geography of a region including ports, facilities and running times.
  • Understanding of accounting, budgeting, forecasting and financial planning processes to effectively manage the company budget.
  • Ability to interpret, administer and insure compliance with federal, state and local government regulations related to vessel manning, construction, maintenance & repair, safety, training, navigation, work rules, emergency response, licensing and towing operations.
  • Knowledge of markets relative to the transportation services involved, including current and future market potential, competitor penetration and capabilities, and other external factors, e.g. political, social and economic.
  • Strong decision making and problem solving abilities. Effective at motivating, resolving conflict, providing clear direction and developing employees.
  • Good interpersonal skills to work well with customers, peers, superiors, competitors and the general public.
  • Proficient in the English language with strong interpersonal, written and oral communicative skills to draft business letters, develop reports, deliver presentations, create policies & procedures and write technical specifications.
  • Proficient in the use and development of change management protocols.
  • Ability to deviate from established routines on short notice and to recognize the level of importance of new assignments.
  • Demonstrated experience re-engineering and improving processes that drive efficiency, increase profitability and support revenue growth.
  • Ability to manage and deliver high quality performance on multiple, simultaneous strategic, value-added tasks and priorities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Sea-going career as a Master or Chief Engineer or a Maritime Academy education or a combination of a Master's or Bachelor's degree with business management experience may be deemed equivalent.
  • 10 years' of progressive and upwardly mobile experience, including 3 -- 5 years of recent leadership at a project or operational/functional level.
  • Possession of a valid USCG License desirable.
