The Oregon Youth Authority is currently hiring for a temporary Cook position at Oak Creek Youth Correctional Facility in Albany, Oregon. The purpose of this position is to cook and serve nutritious and appetizing meals based on state and federal guidelines. This position also trains and supervises youth in custody who are participating in vocational food -related work experience programs.
Oak Creek Youth Correctional Facility is one of ten Oregon Youth Authority Correctional Facilities. It holds the distinction as the sole facility that serves young women in Oregon. Located in the city of Albany within Linn County, Oak Creek serves approximately 65 female youth in the juvenile and adult justice systems. Like the nine facilities that serve males, Oak Creek houses youth who are adjudicated for criminal behavior in juvenile court, as well as youth serving sentences that originated in adult court from various jurisdictions. These youth have either been waived to adult court from juvenile court or by virtue of their age and severity of the criminal offense automatically remanded to adult court.
Unique among the OYA facilities and unlike their male facility counterparts, is Oak Creek's capacity and challenge to address all aspects of a correctional facility. Stated another way, Oak Creek is the sole facility in OYA that engages in the functions of Intake, Long Term Care, Mental Health, Behavior Management, and Transition. While some OYA facilities may do most of the five functions listed above, no OYA facility aside from Oak Creek addresses all five areas as part of its ongoing practice.

Temporary: This is a temporary position: The assignment for any single temporary appointment may not exceed six calendar months or (1,040 hours).
Duties & Responsibilities
Supervises and trains youth in the preparation and serving of meals.
Trains vocational youth in proper usage of kitchen tools and equipment, including knives, slicers, food choppers, ovens, and food service chemicals. This training also includes proper food safety and sanitation practices, and proper cleanup after each meal.
Assures proper transportation of residents in a safe and secure manner. Wears duress system and radio anytime supervising youth. Knows whereabouts at all times of youth during their assignments to the kitchen.
Controls behavior of youth assigned to the work area or in close proximity campus wide.
Visually supervises youth in the kitchen at all times in regards to manners, conduct, and behavior. Acts as liaison to maintain positive communications between youth, kitchen, and administration, and to relay pertinent information to individual units, security staff, Treatment Manager and Program Director.
Works independently using common Oregon Youth Authority (OYA) menu and standardized recipes to cook, prepare, and coordinate nutritious, appetizing, and visually appealing meals every day.
Adjusts menus and recipes to meet site population needs including re-evaluating changes for nutritional content, and staying in compliance with federal USDA guidelines while documenting menu changes.
Prepares special diets for medical, dental, and religious needs.
Performs daily cooking tasks, provides instructions, and makes preparations utilizing a variety of equipment such as washing, chopping, slicing, cutting, and dicing of foods.
Coordinates service and delivery of meals effectively, in a timely manner, and on schedule.
Maintains health and sanitation standards in food preparation including food, utensils, and equipment. Responsible for the sanitation of the kitchen area.
OYA facilities are tobacco free environments.
Shift work in a 24-hour, 7-day a week operation, with night shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
Adhere to the dress code of the specific work site.
Frequent exposure to verbal abuse, threats, and dealing with impulsive, rebellious, assaultive youth.
The use of reasonable force in the performance of duties or during a disturbance or other emergency situation may be required.
Physical standards for vision, hearing, dexterity, push/pull, running, and jogging.
Transport youth as requested, and, if in a security position, operate state vehicles constantly.
Qualifications, Required & Requested Skills
Two years of cooking experience in an institution or commercial firm serving complete meals;
An Associate's degree in Food Service Management, Foods and Hospitality Service, or a directly-related field.
This position requires a food handler's card, must have the ability to obtain the appropriate county food handler's card within 30 days of hire.

This standard requires OYA to conduct criminal background checks, conduct a check of the state's child abuse registry, and made its best efforts to contact prior institutional employers to obtain this information.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) requires correctional organizations to ensure that their employees are Tuberculosis (TB) free. All OYA employees are required to submit to a two-step TB test which is currently the requirement of the CDC to establish a TB free "base line." Rather than OYA conducting the test, employees may choose to work with their personal health care providers to provide the agency with medical documentation that demonstrates that they are TB free. If offered employment and you accept, OYA will offer you the TB testing, and if you refuse, OYA will require the necessary documentation from your personal health care provider as a condition of employment.
